By the time he came to the Devils, Reese was well accustomed to being a backup already, having served as one on each
NHL team he's played for. The Devils was the fifth team he was on since leaving the Leafs in 1992 as part of the largest
trade in NHL history at the time. (The Doug Gilmour from Calgary trade.)
I had seen Reese play while he was with the Leafs. While those teams were bad then, it was obvious that he wasn't
gonna be "the man."
Besides those 3 games in Jersey, he also saw time with the IHL's Detroit Vipers that year.
...And the next. (In both, he would go all the way to the Turner Cup finals with the Vipers, winning it in 1997.)
He would retire in the Leafs' organization in 1999. He became a goalie consultant for the Lightning the following year
and was with that organization when they won the Cup in 2004. He would also later on be the goalie coach in
Philadelphia, and currently with the Dallas Stars.
