Many Devils fans viewed Volchenkov as a top prize in the 2010 Free Agent Frenzy. He was a stay-at-home
defenseman that wasn't afraid to get physical in front of his own net, could block shots (I saw that he used to be a
goalie. So that's why he was so good at that.), and not draw an assload of interference penalties in doing so.
All 3 areas happened to be needs for the Devils, by a mere coincidence.
The departure of Paul Martin to the Penguins opened the door to bring him in.
I had even overlooked the fact that the first goal ever scored at the Rock (by Brian Gionta) was a deflection off his
skate. (Sorry, Anton.)
While he did serve the purpose, the contract that he was given was an eyesore to a few people. On top of that, because
of his playing style, injuries were mounting up. So with 2 years left on the deal, he was waived for the purpose of being
an amnesty buyout. It lead to his signing with the Predators. Again, he served the purpose, but he wasn't a regular in
their lineup, having played only 46 games for them. (Although 4 of the scratches weren't by coach's choice; he was
suspended for an illegal hit to the head on Michael Ferland of the Flames, a suspension that he thought was too much.)
After a year off in 15-16, he signed to play with Admiral Vladivostok of the KHL.
