Tootoo's making the team in 2014 proved to be a big deal for two reasons.
First, it made him the first ever Nunavummiuq (That IS a word, and proper demonym for a native of Nunavut.) to play
for the Devils.
Second, he was in the Devils' camp as a tryout. It's not the first time he was given another chance to get his NHL career
back on track; much was made of his completion of an alcohol abuse program in 2011, having done so just in time to
participate in the playoffs for the Predators. This time, it was just to show that he can still be an NHL regular, as he
had spent most of the 13-14 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
He had a history of playing gritty hockey, which was likely why he got a look. (You can never have enough players of
this kind.) He played well enough in preseason to get a one-year deal for the season. The solid play continued, to where
when the coaching change was made, he was moved to the second line. Thus, he had scored double figures in goals in
a season for the first time since the 07-08 season with the Predators. (11)
Thus, he was the Devils' nominee for the Masterton in 2015. Another test passed for him.
And the tests for him, both on the ice and off it, continued for 15-16. This time, however, it didn't go to plan on the ice.
