My initial thought when Tedenby was drafted was "Great, another small player." This was at a time when I felt that the
Devils needed to look for some size for down the road.
I would change my tune later, though, after learning more about him. Of course, he has plenty of skill. You can't have
too much of that in today's game. But he also was ranked as the fastest skater in the 2008 Draft.
After finishing his contract with HV-71, he was free to come play in North America. So he was in camp in 2010. He
WAS getting tossed around pretty good in preseason games, so it was decided that he get some time in the AHL.
After a month, during the flood of injuries that the Devils go through, he got the call to the bigs. He got involved early,
getting his first NHL point in his first game against Buffalo, and his first goal against Edmonton.
Two things had kept him from being a regular: his inconsistency, which is expected to happen from a player so
young, and getting tossed around like a rag doll, which is expected to happen to a player his size. Both are things that
can be worked on, though, especially in trying to develop a more complete player. As long as he doesn't become
another Niclas Bergfors.
Let's be honest, though, he struggled to adapt. So after he finished the 13-14 season, he decided to return to HV71.
(Although he did sign with a KHL team prior to that. That contract was cancelled when Lev Prague folded.) He was
about the same pointswise as any North American season his first season back, but did improve greatly the
following one, finally getting the bigger role and the chance to show just how dynamic he is.
