Speers did get a free look for a couple of weeks into the 2016-17 season. After those couple of weeks, he was
returned to the Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where he was team captain, for his final year in junior hockey.
When he joined the Greyhounds, he already had a good offensive package, particularly his skating and his stick
handling. He also gets a lot of credit for playing a smart game.
Since he joined them, his defensive game has gotten some work, getting better every year.
Some scouts, and the writers at Hockey's Future, say that Speers' offense will give him the best chance to make it to
the NHL. They do recognize the work he put in on the defensive side, though, which makes him that much more
valuable. To me, though, they talk like it's one or the other rather than make it as a two-way player.
And even then, he just wants to compete.
