As far as size and roles, the trade for Smith-Pelly was a lateral move. However, unlike Matteau, he didn't have a rep for
being a hothead. His issue with past teams is just finding his place on it.
When he arrived to the Devils, though, he almost felt at home. He immediately had a 2-point game against Nashville (a
goal and an assist), then followed that with a goal against Dallas.
The team had struggled to get offense going even strength for most of the season. Smith-Pelly, though, did provide a
threat during the last month of a season.
He was an RFA, but wasn't tendered a qualifying offer. The plan, though, is/was to resign him. Some speculated that it
was all a matter of terms, but that's water under the bridge now, as he was inked with the hopes that what he brought
