I remember back during the 2009 playoff series against the Hurricanes, where it seemed like Ruutu was always getting
under the Devils' skin. Fellow Finn Jussi Jokinen was the more telltale Devil Killer then, but Ruutu played his part.
The Devils in 2014 were missing grit, among other things. That's why the move to bring Ruutu in was made.
He had been riddled with injuries early in his career, including a back and ankle injury that kept him out of action for
most of 2005-06. Really, other than his rookie season, he never really got off the ground with the Blackhawks. The
trade to the Hurricanes helped get his career back on track.
He has represented Finland very well on the international level, including gold at the 2011 Worlds in Bratislava, and
2 bronzes in the Olympics in Vancouver and Sochi.
Other than the lack of "the gift of gab," he reminds me of Esa Tikkanen a little bit. At least they got him while he was
still able to be productive, unlike Tikkanen. At least that's what I said before reality set in. And you see the end results
He signed a PTO with the Vancouver Canucks for training camp, but it didn't end with a contract with them.
