McAmmond emerged on the NHL scene with the Edmonton Oilers in the mid-90s and played there as a solid, speedy
checking line forward until the end of the century. It wasn't until he was returned to the Chicago Blackhawks at that time
that the journeyman billing that he obtained started to come in.
The 09-10 season was actually not the first time McAmmond was playing in the Devils' system. He played for the
Albany River Rats during the 04-05 lockout, leading the team in scoring that season with 61 points.
He also didn't immediately sign with the Devils for the season, either. He had signed with Lowell 3 weeks prior to
changing the contract to a 2-way deal.
His delay with New Jersey was delayed due to a sinus infection, but finally did so against the Nashville Predators. In
that game, with his speed and his ability to win faceoffs, a key element to the puck control game, he showed that he
indeed fit in to the Devils' style of play even at 36.
Now that I think about it, I would have loved to have seen him on the team 10 years ago.
He had a tryout with the Islanders the following fall, but failed to make the team. He didn't catch on anywhere else,
either, which left him 4 games shy of 1000 in his career.
Not long after retirement, he would start coaching minor hockey in Vernon, BC.
