Stats in bold signifies team leader.
If you think about it, Lefley was one of the first players ever to be property at one time or another of all three current
New York area hockey franchises. (Note that I said franchises, not teams.) He was Rangers property at the time the
Islanders pursued and ultimately signed him in their first season of existence. And of course, the Scouts obtained him in
the expansion draft in 74.
Wherever he played, though, whether in the NHL or the minors, he was a solid defender who was a good checker.
After the 77-78 season, he finished his career in Europe, with 3 seasons in Germany, and 1 in Switzerland. After
retirement, he later became a coach for teams in both those leagues.
At the time of his death, he was the coach of HC Bolzano of the Italian League. Reportedly, he was on his way home
after a game when he fell asleep at the wheel and subsequently hit an oncoming truck.
There's a golf tournament held every year in his memory in the metro Winnipeg area. Found a group on Facebook about
it that's run by his family.
