Much was made about Kalinin's signing with the Devils back in May. A lot of it being "Who?", though; he was
obviously not a household name on this side of the Atlantic.
He has some skill on offense; he's not afraid to play the north-south game, and has also played on the point on the
power play. (The word "dynamic" has been used about him.), But he also has the size and defensive skill that makes
him capable of playing the NHL style of game, something very few Russians can do.
He apparently also has some leadership skills, as well, as at only 23 years old, he was the captain of Avangard.
He had signed a one-year deal, apparently as an experiment, to see if the hypothesis of him being NHL ready is true.
Well, he was a regular in the bottom 6, and he brought the lunch pail every night. He played well enough to get a
