Both Clowe and David Clarkson were on the short list of the top power forwards available for the 2013 edition of Free
Agent Frenzy. In fact, both were very much alike: both are capable of getting you 20 goals a season consistently, and
both are willing to scrap. The one difference I see is Clowe is the better setup man than Clarkson. (That and Clowe
doesn't think he's a skill player, unlike Clarkson.)
It was apparent that Clarkson, though, was going to depart from New Jersey to sign with Toronto. Which was why
Clowe was pursued and ultimately signed on.
He did need to be smart out there, though... Or I should say while sitting on the bench. He had had two incidents in the
previous two seasons: whacking his stick at the Kings' Jarret Stoll from the bench in 2012, and leaving the bench to
fight Andrew Shaw of the Blackhawks in 2013.
There had been one issue with him, however: concussions. He had a huge one while playing with, I think, the Sharks,
(During the season that he would be traded to the Rangers.) and three more since joining the Devils, the last one being
in November in a game against St. Louis. There's talk of retirement, but nothing's been announced yet.
In the meantime, he did work with the players in a coaching manner in 15-16, albeit acting more like an advisor. He
officially got the title of assistant coach this July in preparation for the 16-17 season.
