Stats in bold signifies team leader.
It had been a common theme that when the Devils acquired what was supposed to be a goal scorer via free agency, they
would all but disappear. With Cammalleri, this proved to not be the case, as he, despite the team's offensive
deficiencies, still nearly scored 30 goals his first season in the Garden State. (Granted, things went south in later seasons,
which ultimately lead to a buyout.)
He was also probably their best athleteat the time, even for being in his 30s; he had played soccer, baseball, and golf
growing up, and also keeps in very good shape even now.
And also, what have we said about some of the smaller star players in the past? That they play big? Yep, that's Cammy.
When he joined the team, I joked that I hoped that he knew Lou Lamoriello's policy about players (not) wearing the
number 13, his usual number for most of his career. Obviously, he indeed knew, having worn 23. With Ray Shero
coming in, though, that all changed, so for the 15-16 season, he became the first player to wear the number in team
history, and the first for the franchise since Robin Burns wore it with the Kansas City Scouts.
(P.S. Pierre Gauthier blew it with him. That is all.)
