Brunner had been a star in his homeland before he signed an ELC with the Red Wings during the summer of 2012. In a
lot of circles, though, his emergence came out of nowhere. Well, Ken Holland knows where and how to find them.
He had a good run during the shortened season, scoring 26 points in 44 games, plus 9 points during the playoffs for the
From what I can see, he has the total package offensively: can shoot, can pass, can skate, and on top of that, can play
with grit. He looked like, however, that he ultimately had a hard time adapting to the North American style. (And don't
tell me that Peter DeBoer refused to play him. There are more feasible reasons that he underachieved as a Devil than
simply (operative word) "he wasn't given enough ice time.")
There was a rumor floating around in July that Brunner was going to sign with the Devils then, but nothing
materialized. His agent probably overpriced him, resulting in not getting a deal by the start of camp leaguewide. Lou
Lamoriello did promise him a tryout if he still didn't have a contract, and he lived up to that promise. Brunner signed
his PTO in time to practice and get his first game action in against the Islanders.
He would get a contract for the season the week after.
