|Regular Season Statistics with the Franchise
Johnston had coached with the California Seals for 2 seasons and was part of the University of Denver
coaching staff for 6 more before he joined the Rockies staff in 1981. Billy MacMillan, now the GM, had
also hired him as one of his assistants.
He was first an assistant, but after a terrible start to the season, Johnston and Bert Marshall switched
positions, so Johnston filled in at the head spot for the remainder of the season.
When the Rockies moved to New Jersey, he stayed on with the Devils as assistant. But when Bill
MacMillan was let go, he was removed from the bench. He would, however, stay with the team as
scout, and later serve a lengthy tenure as the Director of Player Personnel, stepping down in 1996.
He would become the Ottawa Senators' GM by the end of the millennium. He has also worked in the
scouting department for the Chicago Blackhawks and the Carolina Hurricanes.
